Beauty, it may
be skin deep but that's not deep enough
to escape a wax strip!
A couple of months ago I was having coffee with a friend of
mine and excitedly telling him about this great idea we’d just
had for a new regular feature. I told him we’d open ourselves
to any challenge, go try it out and then tell our readers what
a great experience it was. He said, “I don’t think you
realise what you’re letting yourself in for.”
Did
I remember his words when I was in the gym dodging punches
last month? Nope. Any recollection when Katie from ‘Beauty by
Katie’ in Nerja suggested I come along and spend some time
being pampered? Nope. In fact it wasn’t until the first wax
strip tore the man fluff from my leg that the total recall
came, along with the realisation of exactly what he meant!
So there
I found myself, a bloke in a beauty salon, feeling a bit like
a fish out of water... a hairy fish. At this point I have to
point out that interviewing Katie whilst having my legs waxed
was certainly an interesting experience but I did apologise
after for my bad language. In between giggles Katie explained
that beauty isn’t just for the girls these days. Men are
starting to take a lot more interest in their appearance and
her range of treatments reflects that. I was also booked in
for a men’s manicure and a men’s facial so she could show me
that the quest for beauty isn’t always a painful one. And, had
I been hairy enough I could have had my back, chest and arms
waxed, eyebrows tidied and a pedicure (Maybe next time).
Legs
de-fuzzed I was ready for my facial. The interview process
became a little easier at this point however, I couldn’t see
much past the cucumber slices. I was cleansed, toned and left
with some relaxing music while my face mask set. This
gave
Mr. Snappy the photographer a
chance to wipe the tears of laughter from his eyes, pick
himself up off the floor and take some more photos while Katie
explained a bit more about men’s beauty treatments. Apparently
the market for men’s beauty products is growing faster than
the market for women’s. In the UK, last year the female
category of body cleansing & moisturising products grew by 4%,
but the male segment grew by 18%!
Why? Why not! If your job is, say, in the hospitality sector
or you cook or serve in a restaurant your clients don’t want
to see dirty, bitten nails. And if you’re a single bloke you
may find that a manicure and facial works better than your
best chat up lines!
On
to the manicure. That is, once I’d stopped touching my legs
(they’re so smooth, I can’t help it). The men’s manicure is
basically the same as the girls have but without the polish.
That is, for those who don’t know: shaped, cleaned, cuticles
pushed and finished off with a nice buff.
So there I was, ready for my public! Actually, all pain aside
it was nice to be pampered. The facial has done wonders for my
combination skin (see I even learned something) and I have had
several comments on my nails.
Special thanks to Katie for a worthy challenge. Blokes... Go
and get yourselves pampered!
